    On the rough Gronwall lemma and its applications

    We present a rough path analog of the classical Gronwall Lemma introduced recently by A. Deya, M. Gubinelli, M. Hofmanov\'a, S. Tindel in [arXiv:1604.00437] and discuss two of its applications. First, it is applied in the framework of rough path driven PDEs in order to establish energy estimates for weak solutions. Second, it is used in order to prove uniqueness for reflected rough differential equations

    The final examination in medicine : time for change?

    Most medical programmes culminate in a final assessment, in order that participants may be tested and graded. In June 1995, at the University of Malta, a group of 53 medical students sat for their final examination; medicine was one of the three co-equal component subjects of this statutory qualifying examination. The scope of this paper is to analyze the results obtained in the final examination in medicine and to use this data to address such issues as aims of this examination, method and quality assurance of assessment. The result obtained by candidates in the final examination in medicine was correlated with their university entry qualifications. The composite mark for each candidate was split into its components and analysis took the form of description, correlation and clustering. Computation of Cronbach’s alpha facilitated anlaysis of reliability of each of the three parts of the examination. The findings of this paper suggest that there is room for improving the quality of assessment methods. A review of methods and procedures, with the dual purpose of decreasing bias and increasing specificity and sensitivity of this statutory examination will not only benefit candidates, but ultimately also the University of Malta. The final qualifying examination in medicine should have clearly defined objectives and methods of assessment should be aimed specifically at reaching them. It needs to be able to assess the ability to think critically about diagnosis and management and to ensure that the candidate has a satisfactory base of factual knowledge.     New Star Forming Galaxies at z\approx 7 from WFC3 Imaging

    The addition of Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has led to a dramatic increase in our ability to study the z>6 Universe. The increase in the near-infrared (NIR) sensitivity of WFC3 over previous instruments has enabled us to reach apparent magnitudes approaching 29 (AB). This allows us to probe the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum, redshifted into the NIR at z>6z>6. Taking advantage of the large optical depths at this redshift, resulting in the Lyman-alpha break, we use a combination of WFC3 imaging and pre-existing Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) imaging to search for z approx 7 over 4 fields. Our analysis reveals 29 new z approx 7 star forming galaxy candidates in addition to 16 pre-existing candidates already discovered in these fields. The improved statistics from our doubling of the robust sample of z-drop candidates confirms the previously observed evolution of the bright end of the luminosity function.Comment: 15 pages, accepted in MNRA

    The ultraviolet properties of star-forming galaxies - I. HST WFC3 observations of very high redshift galaxies

    The acquisition of deep near-IR imaging with Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope has provided the opportunity to study the very high redshift Universe. For galaxies up to z≈ 7.7 sufficient wavelength coverage exists to probe the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum without contamination from either Lyman α emission or the Lyman α break. In this work we use near-infrared (near-IR) imaging to measure the rest-frame UV continuum colours of galaxies at 4.7 < z < 7.7. We have carefully defined a colour–colour selection to minimize any inherent bias in the measured UV continuum slope for the drop-out samples. For the highest redshift sample (6.7 < z < 7.7), selected as zf850lp-band drop-outs, we find mean UV continuum colours approximately equal to zero (AB), consistent with a dust-free, solar metallicity, star-forming population (or a moderately dusty population of low metallicity). At lower redshift we find that the mean UV continuum colours of galaxies (over the same luminosity range) are redder, and that galaxies with higher luminosities are also slightly redder on average. One interpretation of this is that lower redshift and more luminous galaxies are dustier; however, this interpretation is complicated by the effects of the star formation history and metallicity and potentially the initial mass function on the UV continuum colours

    On Multilingual Training of Neural Dependency Parsers

    We show that a recently proposed neural dependency parser can be improved by joint training on multiple languages from the same family. The parser is implemented as a deep neural network whose only input is orthographic representations of words. In order to successfully parse, the network has to discover how linguistically relevant concepts can be inferred from word spellings. We analyze the representations of characters and words that are learned by the network to establish which properties of languages were accounted for. In particular we show that the parser has approximately learned to associate Latin characters with their Cyrillic counterparts and that it can group Polish and Russian words that have a similar grammatical function. Finally, we evaluate the parser on selected languages from the Universal Dependencies dataset and show that it is competitive with other recently proposed state-of-the art methods, while having a simple structure.Comment: preprint accepted into the TSD201

    Adenosine A1 Receptor-Mediated Synaptic Depression in the Developing Hippocampal Area CA2

    Immunolabeling for adenosine A1 receptors (A1Rs) is high in hippocampal area CA2 in adult rats, and the potentiating effects of caffeine or other A1R-selective antagonists on synaptic responses are particularly robust at Schaffer collateral synapses in CA2. Interestingly, the pronounced staining for A1Rs in CA2 is not apparent until rats are 4 weeks old, suggesting that developmental changes other than receptor distribution underlie the sensitivity of CA2 synapses to A1R antagonists in young animals. To evaluate the role of A1R-mediated postsynaptic signals at these synapses, we tested whether A1R agonists regulate synaptic transmission at Schaffer collateral inputs to CA2 and CA1. We found that the selective A1R agonist CCPA caused a lasting depression of synaptic responses in both CA2 and CA1 neurons in slices obtained from juvenile rats (P14), but that the effect was observed only in CA2 in slices prepared from adult animals (~P70). Interestingly, blocking phosphodiesterase activity with rolipram inhibited the CCPA-induced depression in CA1, but not in CA2, indicative of robust phosphodiesterase activity in CA1 neurons. Likewise, synaptic responses in CA2 and CA1 differed in their sensitivity to the adenylyl cyclase activator, forskolin, in that it increased synaptic transmission in CA2, but had little effect in CA1. These findings suggest that the A1R-mediated synaptic depression tracks the postnatal development of immunolabeling for A1Rs and that the enhanced sensitivity to antagonists in CA2 at young ages is likely due to robust adenylyl cyclase activity and weak phosphodiesterase activity rather than to enrichment of A1Rs

    New insights into the regulation of synaptic plasticity from an unexpected place:Hippocampal area CA2

    The search for molecules that restrict synaptic plasticity in the brain has focused primarily on sensory systems during early postnatal development, as critical periods for inducing plasticity in sensory regions are easily defined. The recent discovery that Schaffer collateral inputs to hippocampal area CA2 do not readily support canonical activity-dependent long-term potentiation (LTP) serves as a reminder that the capacity for synaptic modification is also regulated anatomically across different brain regions. Hippocampal CA2 shares features with other similarly "LTP-resistant" brain areas in that many of the genes linked to synaptic function and the associated proteins known to restrict synaptic plasticity are expressed there. Add to this a rich complement of receptors and signaling molecules permissive for induction of atypical forms of synaptic potentiation, and area CA2 becomes an ideal model system for studying specific modulators of brain plasticity. Additionally, recent evidence suggests that hippocampal CA2 is instrumental for certain forms of learning, memory, and social behavior, but the links between CA2-enriched molecules and putative CA2-dependent behaviors are only just beginning to be made. In this review, we offer a detailed look at what is currently known about the synaptic plasticity in this important, yet largely overlooked component of the hippocampus and consider how the study of CA2 may provide clues to understanding the molecular signals critical to the modulation of synaptic function in different brain regions and across different stages of development
